A funeral director intern applicant must be at least eighteen (18) years of age and a high school graduate who has successfully completed either: (A) a course of education consisting of (i) thirty (30) semester hours or forty-five (45) quarter hours of college level work in a regionally accredited postsecondary educational institution that includes course work in the subjects of English, the humanities, science, business, and other electives that apply toward a baccalaureate degree from the postsecondary educational institution; and
(ii) four (4) academic quarters, or its equivalent, in an accredited college, school, or department of mortuary science approved by the board; or
(B) a twenty-one (21) month program in an accredited college, school, or department of mortuary science that has been approved by the board.
The General Assembly made discretionary an examination as a prerequiste for licensure that the State Board of Funeral and Cemetery Service made mandatory. The intern must pass an exam in the field of funeral service (832 IAC 3-2-1©). 832 IAC 3-2-2(b) describes the examination as consisting of two (2) parts, one concerning funeral service science and the other concerning funeral service arts. The regulations require a score of seventy-five percent (75%) or higher for the total examination for passing but sets out scores less than seventy percent (70%) as failing. No mention of what happens between 71 and 74 percent, and this is not made any clearer with this sentence: “[a]score of at least seventy-five percent (75%) is required to pass a retake of either section of the examination.”
The applicant must provide proof of no convictions that would constitute a ground for disciplinary sanction under IC 25-1-1 or a crime that has a direct bearing on the applicants ability to practice competently.
During the internship, the intern must have worked in a funeral home under the direct supervision of a funeral director for at least one thousand five hundred (1,500) hours over a period of at least one (1) year and assisted in the embalming of at least twenty-four (24) bodies (which requirement shall be met by at least six (6) embalmings per quarter during the obtaining of the required one (1) year experience.)
Finally, the applicant must pay the licensing fee set by the Board.
